The food at Chinoise is fresh and tasty. It's a nice selection of Asian styles and I'm told the sushi is excellent. However:
(1) You'll wait a very long time for a table at lunch on weekdays (noon to 1);
(2) The service is extremely slow at lunch on weekdays; and
(3) It's fairly expensive. I've never eaten lunch there for less than $20.
Just a warning.
Chinoise restaurant have such a great variety of Asian dishes and their sushi bar has the best sushi quality not to mention their weekly specials. The food is good, it is so reasonable I would recommend it to all my friends. Their staffs are nice and friendly The decors of the Chinoise are so cozy it's a great feeling being in there.
I've tried Chinoise about a half a dozen times, all the while trying to be impressed with their food. Sadly, I was never convinced. It's sushi was poor in comparison to some of the hole in the wall places, you can find in the I-District. Their hot plates were mediocre at best. Since you are in the I-district, you can cut costs by meeting at one of the more authentic restaurants, and enjoy the food more.
This is a good place to meet up with friends because it offers a variety of options for either a real dinner or simply a light happy-hour style occasion. The lunch and dinner menus are reasonably priced, with excellent food and selection. While I have not had their alcoholic beverages, their light happy-hour type food as well as their dinners have impressed me; I would recommend any of their noodle dishes.
The interior of this place is nicely decorated and to hang out for a drink. They offer various different types of Asian cuisine, but made in the "Chinoise" interpretation. The portions are a little small, the food will probably not taste the same as what you would expect it to, but it's still good. They also have a nice staff.
